DJI has announced a new drone: The Phantom 4 Advanced, which improves on the original Phantom 4 with major improvements to its aerial imaging capabilities and elsewhere. Featuring a 1-inch-type 20-megapixel sensor and mechanical shutter, users will have both higher quality images and better creative control.

In fact, the Phantom 4 Advanced’s upgraded camera can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second – giving you the option of slowing things down for a graceful cinematic look (or cropping in when outputting 1080p). It also features more powerful video processing, ramming data through its pipeline at 100Mbps bitrate at H.264 4K 60fps, or H.265 4K @ 30 fps.

“Excellent optical performance, sensors, and processors ensure everything is captured with high dynamic range and more image detail needed for advanced post-production,” says the DJI release announcing the unit.

Similar to the Phantom 4 Pro, the new model comes with a number of intelligent flight features that allow for smooth automatic flight modes. Those features include:

  • Draw,
  • ActiveTrack,
  • TapFly,
  • Gesture, and
  • Tripod.

These features can make following a moving subject (ActiveTrack), or slowing down flight movements to liquid-like smoothness (Tripod) a breeze.

And still, there’s more. DJI’s engineers have equipped the unit with a “FlightAutonomy system” that includes five vision sensors, a forward-facing obstacle avoidance system, dual-band/redundant satellite positioning (GPS and GLONASS), as well as ultrasonic rangefinders. Together, they mean the Phantom 4 Advanced will be able to fly with precision and maintain a rock-solid hover whether in an open air or in GPS-denied environments (such as under a bridge).

The Advanced+ version features what TDC guesses is the same (and excellent) screen built into the Phantom 4 Professional’s controller. That 5.5-inch, 1080p screen features 1000 nits of brightness, meaning you can see it clear as day even under bright sunlight. No hood required, and it means a faster setup to get flying.

DJI Phantom 4 Advanced PLUS Controller

The Phantom 4 Advanced features a flight time of up to 30 minutes, and extended 128 GB storage via a microSD card. Retail for the P4A will be $1,349 US and $1,649 for the Phantom 4 Advanced+. They’ll start shipping April 30 of this year.

And – if you’re a Phantom 4 owner – fear not. DJI emphasizes it will continue to provide after-sales support to Phantom 4 customers, and that the DJI GO 4 app will remain compatible with their device.
